Asking Questions That Show Executive-Level Thinking
When you are asked, “Do you have any questions for us?” it is not small talk. This is your chance to demonstrate curiosity, strategic thinking, and that you are already imagining yourself in the role. The questions you ask signal whether you think like a peer or like a candidate.
Strong questions go beyond surface level details. They explore how success is measured, what challenges the team is facing, and where the business is heading. By asking about transformation priorities, culture, decision making, and board engagement, you show that you care about how the role fits into the bigger picture. These conversations also give you valuable insight into whether the opportunity truly aligns with your goals and leadership style.
You do not need to ask every question. Choosing two or three that feel natural to the flow of the discussion is enough to shift how you are perceived. When done well, your questions reinforce that you are ready to contribute at the highest level.
Practical tip
Before each interview, select three thoughtful questions that relate to the organisation’s priorities and challenges. Keep them handy so you can use them when the conversation turns to your questions.
